GHAS General Education Lecture Series on Ethnic Studies

Topic: The Birth of the Hakka in Taiwan: An Attempt at Reflection from the Perspective of Ethnic Formation Theory
Lecturer: Prof. Wei-Der Hsu (Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University)
This lecture begins with the theory of “ethnic formation,” asking how, when, and why the “Hakka in Taiwan” came to be recognized as a distinct “Hakka ethnic group.” Using postwar Taiwan as the temporal framework, it integrates basic, process, and dynamic models to propose a multi-axial trajectory of “Hakka ethnicization.” The lecture traces the shifts in classificatory categories from “Guangdong ancestry” to “Kheh (Ke-lang)” and finally to “Hakka,” explaining how state policies, socio-economic transformations, grassroots communities, and identity politics interacted to collectively shape the “birth of the Hakka in Taiwan.” It concludes by reflecting on the implications of this process for contemporary interethnic relations in Taiwan and for the field of Hakka studies.
Wei-Der Hsu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Originally from Taipei’s old urban district, he has become a “new Hsinchu resident” after his two children were born in Hsinchu. His research interests include identity studies, ethnic relations, nationalism, and social movements.
