Topic: War Migrants: A Preliminary Study on the Self-ascription and Ascription by Others of the 1949 Migrants to Taiwan

Lecturer: Prof. Kuang-Chun Li (Institute of Law and Government, College of Hakka Studies, National Central University)

This lecture focuses on the historical experiences and social and cultural properties of the military personnel and civilians who came to Taiwan in 1949. It seeks to show the impact and mark of war as a force behind population movement, as well as its generational decline. It demonstrates that the social and cultural properties of these migrants are not expressions of an ethnic culture, but rather unintended consequences of the interplay between socio-demographic factors under the pressures of war and resettlement policies.
